Dear Barbara,
February/March 2020
It has been quite some time since you’ve heard from me, so I’m eager to reconnect and share what has been happening at Barbara Glanz Communications and to wish you a happy “almost” Spring. My work is slower right now, but that has been a blessing since I found out in January that I have to have everything out of the garage I have been renting for 15 years…. by April 1.
I guess it is a good thing to sort and throw, but it is also very emotional as well as hard work. I am sure, though, my kids will be glad one day. Anyway, that project has evolved into sorting out my storage space, my office, and my closets, so my focus has NOT been very much on work! Thank you for understanding if I have not been in better touch. This, too, shall end!:-)
Blessings,
“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start…..anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending,” ~ Carl Bard
“There are two ways of spreading the light: to be the candle, or the mirror that reflects it.” ~ Edith Wharton
“She was fabulous. I have already implemented at least one of her suggestions and appreciate the hard work of my staff even more than before. Appreciation does not cost a thing. It is always free.”

IDEA OF THE MONTH
IDEAS FOR APPRECIATION and KINDNESS
  • Make a short visit or take a small plant to an elderly neighbor, retired employee, widow, or person in your company, church or community.
  • Watch for your mailman, custodian, or garbage collector and offer them a cold drink, coffee, or hot chocolate.
  • Leave a thank you note or a small gift for your custodian or the housekeeping person when you stay at a hotel.
  • Graciously thank people who are cleaning the streets, the restrooms, and the offices in your workplace and community.
  • See if you can make eye contact and smile at everyone as you go down the hall or street.
  • Buy a co-worker or any person in uniform a cup of coffee as a “thank you.”
  • Offer to help young mothers with children by holding doors, carrying packages or groceries, or entertaining the children for a moment.
  • Quietly slip some money into the purse or pocket of a friend or co-worker who is struggling.
  • Ask to take a picture of the couple or group when you see someone taking a photo of others.
  • Call a fellow employee or person whom you know has been sick just to see how they are.
  • Surprise your team members by greeting them at the door, shaking their hands, and thanking them for being a part of your team.
  • Collect children’s books to deliver to homeless shelters or to shelters for battered women.
  •  Go to an inner-city park and give away hula hoops and jump ropes.
  • Ask to join people you see sitting alone in the company cafeteria.
  • Leave notes of encouragement at people’s work station, in their cars or in family member’s rooms.
  • Make birthday bags for a food pantry.
“She was inspiring and made me think about how I was coming across to my customers. I have since changed my voice mail recording at work too. She put the wind back in my sails. Great motivational speaker!”
Where in the World is Barbara?
After a lovely trip to Portland, Oregon, for Christmas with two of my daughters and family, I returned home to get ready for a trip to the Panama Canal with Frank. We thoroughly enjoyed the Canal experience and especially the amazing engineering feat to construct the first set of locks so many years ago. We were able to watch from our balcony as we went through the new locks and then later that day we got a different view from an Observation deck as a much larger ship went through the locks.
On the way to the canal, we spent a day in the Cayman Islands where we snorkeled near a sunken ship, then a day in Cartagena which is the only city in the world to be on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. We were intrigued on a nature walk to see a sloth hanging from a vine as well as monkeys in the trees – just what you would hope to see in a rain forest.
Unfortunately, the weather was pretty bad – so choppy one day that we could hardly walk down the halls of the ship, and it was so rough we could not even dock in Costa Rica which was a huge disappointment. We could not believe that we were in the Caribbean and near the equator and still have such cold and rough weather – must be an example of climate change. We did hear the week we got back that there was an earthquake in that area, so perhaps the rough seas were due to underground activity. Just glad it was AFTER we were there!
Our last stop was in Jamaica where we toured a beautiful waterfall, gardens and park. Even though the trip was somewhat of a disappointment because of the weather, Frank and I still had fun going to the shows and enjoying lots of eating and drinking on the five days at sea. I have been on a diet ever
since! 😉
If the corona virus does not change things, I am planning a trip to New York City the end of April for the 75th anniversary of Guideposts, the organization started by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and where I serve on the Advisory Cabinet. I LOVE their ministry as they serve through their wonderful publications, a ministry to military personnel, a caregivers ministry, a 24 hour prayer line, and my favorite, Comfort Kits for Kids to share with children who are hospitalized. They now have several million subscribers to “Guideposts” magazine which brings comfort, inspiration and joy to many households all around the world. www.Guideposts.org
In May I am planning a trip to the Greek Islands and in September to Oberammergau, Germany, for the Passion Play which has long been on my bucket list. Since they only perform it every ten years, 2020 will probably be my last chance to experience it.
With speaking dates and professional conferences and, hopefully, a chance to celebrate Uncle Wayne’s 100th birthday, it will be a very busy summer. I am so blessed to have a life where I get to experience other cultures and meet fascinating people at the same time as doing work I love! Thank you for being a part of this mission.
“Barbara was enthusiastic herself which immediately proved that enthusiasm is contagious. I enjoyed her spirit and her examples to bring back to share with co-workers.”

“Absolutely loved Barbara Glanz!! She did a fantastic job with her presentation and some of the things she said and pointed out have really resonated with me. I’ve already put some of her suggestions into practice. For example, I’ve already complimented several people for the work that they do to make them feel appreciated 🙂 I really liked her positive, fun spirit and her outlook on life. Even though she has been through many trials she doesn’t focus on her circumstances. I would highly recommend her to speak at any event. Awesome choice to choose her as a speaker! I look forward to reading her material on the internet and/or books.”
