Well, we all know how quickly things in our lives can change. Three weeks ago, just after having returned from a trip to Europe and another to Washington, DC, I had a very severe asthma attack and spent several very scary days having difficulty breathing, coughing, wheezing, and not being able to sleep.
After heavy doses of Prednisone, the doctors advised me, three days before we were to leave, to cancel our long-awaited trip to Japan for 2 ½ weeks. Although that was a huge disappointment, I know now I could NEVER have made that long flight and then enjoyed seeing that amazing country with the way I was feeling.

As a result, I have been home now for two weeks, getting my body back in balance and resting. Thankfully, I have had the added joy of reconnecting with many dear friends as well as finishing up some organizing projects that have been waiting for far too long. When speaking on CHANGE, I have many times shared this thought, “All change comes bearing gifts.” How true that has always been in my own life and especially this past two weeks!
Several exciting projects are nearing completion as well – a full length, live, three camera video shoot on “The Simple Truths of Service Inspired by Johnny the Bagger®” which will soon be available as a new product as well as a perpetual calendar of all my favorite inspiring quotations. You will also read about the Kindness Day October 19 at the University of San Diego where I will be on a panel with Ken Blanchard and three other people. I am so thankful for the gift of LIFE!
Blessings,

If each of us would do at least one kind thing a day, think of how much better our world could be.

“Great conference starter. It gets hard to move around so many people and it’s nice to have a “be kind” reminder for attendees. I would have recommended this speaker as the opening keynote over Martha Stewart’s dismal remarks.” ~ Society for Human Resource Management National Convention 2019

Idea of the Month – An Attitude of Gratitude
|
|
THE IDEA:
One of the ways to keep “an attitude of gratitude” in our workplaces and homes is to make a Thanksgiving tree.
(Picture: “From the Human Resources Department of the Southwest Florida Water Management District”.)
THE IDEA IN ACTION:
Many years ago I created a Thanksgiving tree for our home. I took a large manzanita branch, sprayed it gold, and secured it in a base of plaster of Paris. Beside it I kept a basket of small plain cards with holes punched in them, another basket of pieces of colored yarn, and several pens. The tradition in our family is that on November first, the tree is placed on a table in our living room, and during the month each family member writes down things for which he or she is thankful and hangs them on the tree.
|
|
We found that guests in our home for the month of Thanksgiving would almost always take time to read at least some of the cards on the tree and then write their own messages of thanks. Many from the children, such as when my daughter was in Kindergarten and first heard about the Pilgrims, she asked me to write, “I am glad we don’t have to kill the turkey before we eat it,” brought smiles to their faces and added a special sunshine to their day. After several years of this tradition, the mailman always knocked on our door on the first day of Thanksgiving and asked if he could write some things on the tree! And our children’s friends loved writing their “thankfuls” every time they came over during the month.
At the dinner table on Thanksgiving Day we read the cards from the tree as an affirmation of our blessings. Then we save the cards from the year before, and we read those as well. It is a wonderful way to remind us of all the goodness in our lives and reinforces the importance of sharing our gratitude.
TIPS:
It doesn’t just have to be the month of Thanksgiving that we share our gratitude and appreciation for blessings in our lives. This idea can be used year round in a workplace or family to focus on the good things happening each day. If the tree is kept up all year long, it will be important to remove the cards on a regular basis to make room for others and to encourage continual gratitude.

“Barbara was awesome! She is so genuine and kind. She speaks on appreciation with such passion, truly believing and living what she speaks. I watched her interaction with attendees after the session and had a chance to speak with her myself. What you see on stage is what you see off stage too. Truly a remarkable person!”

David Hasselhoff, My “Claim to Fame!”
My children think my greatest claim to fame is that I taught David Hasselhoff in my sophomore English class at Lyons Township High School in La Grange, Illinois, and I also directed him that summer in his first high school play.
